ADDRESSING INSECURITY IN GOMA
As of March 2025, the humanitarian situation in Goma, North Kivu, continues to deteriorate, with over 1 million people displaced into camps amidst escalating insecurity. The volatile security landscape, marked by crime surges including home invasions and kidnappings, threatens vulnerable populations. Wokovuway, a locally rooted organization, is actively countering these challenges by fostering secure environments and ensuring access to essential resources such as water.
The capture of Goma by M23 forces in February 2025 has intensified displacement, with over 71,000 individuals in Lushagala camp alone facing heightened risks. Amidst a broader crisis affecting 25.4 million people, Wokovuway collaborates with partners like UNFPA and UNICEF to mitigate insecurity and restore stability. By establishing secure zones and addressing immediate needs, we aim to protect communities and promote peace in this unstable region. Learn more about our mission.
ENHANCING COMMUNITY SECURITY

In Goma, where criminal activity has surged, targeting humanitarian efforts with vehicle hijackings and violence, Wokovuway strengthens community security through targeted interventions. In 2024, we established secure shelters for 15,000 individuals in Bulengo camp, reducing exposure to external threats and fostering a sense of safety amidst ongoing instability.
Our initiatives include collaborating with local leaders to monitor and protect resource points, such as water tanks installed in 2025 across Lushagala camp. These efforts minimize risks for families, who no longer need to travel miles to fetch water, thereby reducing vulnerability to crime in a region where six aid workers have been killed since January 2025. Wokovuway’s work reinforces stability and security for those most at risk. Support our security efforts.
FOSTERING STABILITY THROUGH DIALOGUE

Wokovuway organizes community dialogues to enhance stability in Goma, engaging over 1,200 participants in Lushagala and Bulengo camps in 2025. These forums address insecurity and resource access, uniting community members to develop strategies for maintaining secure environments amidst a volatile security situation.
By facilitating discussions on protecting water infrastructure and reducing crime, such as the looting reported in South Kivu, Wokovuway builds trust and resilience. These efforts align with calls from humanitarian bodies for all parties to uphold international law, ensuring safer communal spaces in a region where instability remains unpredictable. WATER TANKS FOR SECURITY AND PEACE

Wokovuway, in partnership with UNFPA and UNICEF, implements water tank projects to enhance security and peace in Goma. In 2025, we installed water tanks in Kanyaruchinya camp, serving 5,000 individuals and eliminating the need to travel long distances for water—a journey often fraught with risks in an insecure environment.
These tanks, paired with 2,000 weather-resistant tents distributed in Bulengo camp in 2024, protect 15,000 people from environmental and security threats. By providing reliable water access, Wokovuway reduces exposure to waterborne diseases and crime, contributing to stability in a region where utilities remain disrupted. This initiative fosters peace by securing essential resources locally. Join us in promoting peace.
PROTECTING VULNERABLE POPULATIONS

In Goma, where insecurity has led to targeted violence and displacement, Wokovuway protects vulnerable populations through strategic interventions. In 2024, we supported 700 households across displacement camps with secure shelters and water access, reducing their exposure to crime and instability prevalent in M23-controlled areas.
Our efforts mirror broader humanitarian objectives to safeguard civilians, as evidenced by the protection of thousands seeking refuge at UN bases. By integrating water tank installations with community security measures, Wokovuway strengthens the resilience of those most affected by Goma’s volatile conditions. STRATEGIC GOALS FOR SECURITY AND STABILITY

Wokovuway aims to bolster security and stability in Goma by 2026, planning to install water tanks for 20,000 more displaced individuals across five major camps. We will expand dialogues to 5,000 additional participants, focusing on maintaining secure environments and resource access in a region where insecurity remains highly unpredictable.
Through sustained collaboration with UNFPA, UNICEF, and other partners, Wokovuway integrates these efforts with broader programs, such as hygiene education, to mitigate risks and enhance peace. Our vision is a Goma where secure access to water and safe environments underpin community stability, offering a foundation for recovery amidst ongoing challenges. Contribute to our goals.
