Esther, a 38-year-old mother of five, lives in a small village in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Two years ago, her life took a devastating turn when her husband disappeared during a period of unrest in their region. Left alone with her children—ranging from 4 to 16 years old—Esther faced unimaginable challenges. With no steady income and a home barely holding together, she struggled to feed her family and keep her children in school.
In her darkest moments, Wokovuway Humanitarian Organization stepped in. Our team provided Esther with tarps to repair her leaking roof, offering her family shelter from the harsh rainy seasons. We also supplied essential food items and sanitary products, ensuring her children’s basic needs were met. Through our healthcare initiatives, Esther and her children received vital medications and sanitation education, improving their well-being.
But Wokovuway’s support went beyond immediate relief. We enrolled Esther in our women’s empowerment program, where she learned skills to start a small tailoring business. With a sewing machine provided by our outreach efforts, Esther now earns a modest income, stitching clothes for her neighbors. Her eldest daughter, Marie, received menstrual hygiene kits and education, allowing her to stay in school without interruption.
Today, Esther stands as a beacon of resilience. Her children are healthier, her home is safer, and she has hope for a better future—all thanks to the compassionate support from Wokovuway and our donors. “Wokovuway gave me more than help; they gave me strength,” Esther says with a smile.
